Universal has finally put a release date on the long-awaited film adaptation of the Broadway musical “Wicked.”
According to Variety, the film is slotted for a prime holiday release, on December 20, 2019.
Stephen Daldry is slated to direct the movie. Stars have yet to be announced.
“Wicked” is one of my personal favorite musicals, the soundtrack is one of the most listened to albums on my iPod. So, clearly I am over the moon excited about this news.
Now that the release date and the director are in place, there is only one thing left to do: cast the movie. Unfortunately for the theater nerds out there, I doubt Kristin Chenoweth and Adele Dazeem – sorry, I mean Idina Menzel – will be reprising their roles, because “Wicked” opened on Broadway 13 years ago. In a dream casting scenario, I would love to see Samantha Barks play Elphaba and a blonde Anna Kendrick as Glinda. Barks you may remember played Eponine in Tom Hooper’s “Les Miserables” in 2012.
I will be looking for any casting news, as I am interested to see who they cast.
