Lucasfilm has officially started production on “Star Wars: Episode VIII.”
The film will follow up last year’s blockbuster “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” and will be directed by Rian Johnson, who previously made “Looper” and “Brick.”
Per Entertainment Weekly, the start of production also announced new cast members Laura Dern, Kelly Marie Tran, and the previously announced Benicio Del Toro.
The next chapter in the “Star Wars” saga will be released on December 17, 2017.
Del Toro is always a good get for anything, see his Oscar-winning performance in “Traffic” or his should have been Oscar-winning performance in “Sicario” as exhibits A and B. It is exciting to live in a world where Del Toro is going be in a “Star Wars” movie, and he is playing a villain character. I hope he is Snoke’s puppet master.
“The Force Awakens” is a tough act to follow, but with the talent involved with “Episode VIII,” I doubt it will drop the ball – so to speak.
I am sure that the coming months will bring more new casting news for “Episode VIII,” hopefully, the rest of the new players are as strong as Dern and Del Toro.
