Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt are attached to star in a new musical comedy from Universal Pictures.
The film will be produced by Tatum, Gordon-Levitt, and Marc Platt, the producer of the Broadway smash “Wicked.”
As reported in The Hollywood Reporter, the film will be from an original concept by Gordon-Levitt and Michael Bacall, the screenwriter attached to the project, and has been described as being an R-rated musical comedy.
Not much else is known about the project at this time.
This information is good news for lovers of Hollywood musicals because Hollywood has not produced an original movie musical for some time. I hope that this musical also includes original songs, as it would be a waste to do this project as a jukebox musical.
Tatum and Gordon-Levitt certainly have the talent set required to pull off a movie like this. Tatum’s production number was the highlight of “Hail, Caesar!” and he has shown serious dance skills in “Magic Mike” and “Step Up.” Gordon-Levitt did a show-stopper to a classic Hall and Oates song in “(500) Days of Summer,” and he performed “Make’em Laugh” from the iconic Hollywood musical “Singin’ in the Rain” when he hosted “Saturday Night Live” in 2009.
As a fan of Hollywood musicals – well, musicals in general – this is a project I will be watching closely.
