Universal Still Needs a Director for The Fast and the Furious 8

With the reported release date of April 2017 fast approaching, Universal still has a major hurdle facing The Fast and the Furious 8, the film has no director. The director of the massively successful seventh installment, James Wan, and franchise veteran Justin Lin have opted for other projects.
One resolution that Universal does not want is that series star Vin Diesel direct the film. Diesel had previously directed Los Bandoleros, a short film that acts as a prequel to 2009’s Fast and Furious. While it is a leap from directing a short to directing a feature, the film in question is The Fast and The Furious 8, not Citizen Kane. If you can direct a short, the you are qualified to direct a Fast and Furious movie. Frankly, the only Universal does not want this outcome is that it probably is not the smartest move for the franchise moving forward.
