According to The Hollywood Reporter, Elizabeth Banks is in talks to direct a remake of Charlie’s Angles for Sony.
Sony seeking Banks to direct the remake comes after the success of Bank’s feature directorial debut. This summer’s Pitch Perfect 2, which went on to gross 285 million dollars at the global box office (against a 29 million dollar budget).
Charlie’s Angles was a successful TV series in the 1970’s as well as two successful films in 2000, 2003, and a less successful TV remake in 2011 (cancelled after four episodes).
With the lack of not only female action heroes but female led action franchises, it is not a surprise that Sony reached back to this property for a remake. Banks having found success directing a female-led film seems the right choice, although I do not know how she would do with an action movie.
If it were up to me, this remake would star Emily Blunt, Rebecca Ferguson, and Jessica Alba, one of them obviously rocking the Farrah Fawcett feathered hair.
While remakes, if possible, should be avoided considering how franchise-minded Hollywood is, this project would certainly fill a void that needs to be filled. So, I say do a Charlie’s Angels remake. Only because it is something worth remaking in 2015.
